Cyberspace: Security: Yours, Mine, and Ours...

Have you ever wondered how much of these scare stories from security firms are really 'make-work-projects' by them? Are they creating the problem as well as its presumed solution? Are we being bamboozled? Victims of our fear of flying?

I believe there's actual malicious programming out there, because I've encountered 'ransomware' and had to delete everything and reformat the drive, and re-install everything again to get rid of it. But I also think that quite a lot of these 'scare tactics' are being produced by so-called reputable security firms to soften us up for their latest sales campaign.

And speaking of those, the real experts tell us that many of these multi-purpose security programs aren't any better than a single-purpose 'freebie' you get from the internet's biggest security makers. They say most security programs are only really good at one thing, not a variety of several things. So you need more than one, and these ought to be ones that are best at different kinds of risks, so they complement each other, not compete with each other. You want to cover a range of risks, not just one or two. You want anti-spyware, anti-virus, anti-adware, and something for rootkits and similar nasties. And these need to be compatible so they don't interfere with each other's operation. In brief, don't put all your eggs in one basket, and don't place all your faith in one program.
