Gran Canaria: A closer look....

My thanks to Google Earth and Monsieur Beep for this little visit to Bahia Feliz on Gran Canaria. It looks like a great vacation spot. Just don't overshoot that runway at the Aero Club, unless you are a good swimmer.

  1. Question for Monsieur Beep:

That old red plane at the Aero Club -
Is that a DC-6B by any chance? Just wondering...

  2. the last photo apparently shows the area where I live.
It´s merely a small airfield for the local flying club, but you can never be sure, and there´s lots of water around, haha.
Your pictures are very exciting! One can see the dual carriageway and the motorway which are running along parallel in this part of Gran Canaria.
I´ve never browsed Google Earth because my old computer can´t digest so many data lol. But my netbook can, which is amazing. What a progress has been made during the last decade!

  3. Ray, I´m not sure about the type of the vintage aircraft. I´ve been photographing it, and was looking for some identifying plate last year. But I couldn´t find one.
I recommend you to visit my gallery at flickr.com/photos/mister-beep.
After browsing my stream a little while you´ll find lots of photos which I took of that very plane!! I even creeped into the undercarriage section! You´ll like the pics!

  4. One more thing: you might be wondering about the funny taxiway arrangement, do the pilots really want to follow all those serpentines when taxiing to the runway?
The reason is that the airport is frequently co-used by a motor racing club. Blimey, them motor freaks can make a hell of a noise, on a Sunday afternoon!!!!

Yet generally the area is pretty quiet.

  5. I'll check out your Flickr photos....
thanks for mentioning those. And I did wonder about that cart track beside the runway at the Aero Club - it almost looks like they use the main runway as part of the course.

  6. At the top of the picture, north of the roundabout, that´s in fact a go cart course. But it hasn´t any connection with the airfield, it´s for the speeding tourists.
Man, you can imagine, it can be noisy here!
But I must admit it´s not annoying, because the users have to follow strict restrictions as to the number of operating hours.
