If you read Google News....

If you are reading articles on Google's News App, you need to know that some of those are not checked by the editors of the page hosting the article. You may see a small warning that says they haven't checked the content, which is obtained from sites that they contract with.

I'm mentioning this not because I have any problem or beef with Google, but to warn you that some of those sites-within-sites contain infections of malware. Just last evening, reading one article in Google News, both Bitdefender and Malwarebytes Premium blocked pages on it, and offered to "get me out of here". I took their advice, because (1.) I'm paying for it, and (2.) Both of these security programs are top-rated and do good work. And yes, you can run more than one without conflicts these days. Most security programs now are designed to work along with others for your added protection. I use three different ones. Because an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

In addition to those mentioned above, if you want one that's very good at rooting out adware cookies, sometimes by the dozens, you should get a program called SuperAntiSpyware. There's a freebie version, and a Professional with added features. I have the professional one, with added tools for other useful jobs. And I have never depended on Microsoft's 'Windows Defender' because it doesn't. If you want really effective security, you have to buy it from people who do nothing else.

Yes, and three ounces is worth a kilo and a half.

    1. Hi, Craig...
I hope you get this reply. I haven't been doing much on here for a couple of months, because I've been too busy on Facebook, but I trying to taper off a bit on that...

A month or so ago, I got 'fed up' with testing Windows 10 Home, and wiped it off. I had been running it and Linux Mint 18.2 'Sonya' as a dual-boot config and after dumping Win-10, I put LM 18.2 onto the Optical drive by itself, leaving the regular HD for files & data only. So my fastest PC, the Predator G6-710 is now exclusively Linux, and I love it! There's only two programs made for Windows that are not available for Linux that I really like, and those are Irfan Skiljan's 'Irfanview' (fantastic program!) and Microsoft Research's Image Composite Editor (ICE for short).

To continue using those, I'm keeping my Win 8.1 Pro on my older PC, along with a dual-boot of Linux Mint 18.2 'Sonya'. I have to say, my Win 8.1 is running very well and not causing any problems. It will be maintained until some time in the year 2021, we're told, and by then, who knows? But I like it, and it's now the only Windows I have. Win-10 seems to have become bogged down with what I call 'fluff' - stuff that might be handy sometimes, but I suspect that for the vast majority of users, not required all that often, and therefore mostly a 'resource hog'. In its original incarnation, Win-10 system requirements were the same as Win-7, on which 'chassis' or 'frame' it is built. But with all that 'fluff' now stuffed into it, it has gained a lot of weight, so to speak. And I for one don't need and wouldn't use most of that stuff. Rather than get into a 'non-positive' frame of mind with my other 'Windows Insiders' and our host, Mighty Microsoft, I just quietly pulled its plug and let it go at that. Three years, seven months, and 8 days was enough. I've re-installed Windows so often, I can do it in my sleep. And as you know, if you're a fellow Linux user, Linux does in minutes what takes Mighty Microsoft three separate operations and an hour-and-a-half to finish, if you're lucky, and the creek don't rise. I did suggest a couple of times that Satya and the guys in the back room should take a hard look at Linux, and maybe make then a deal they couldn't refuse, for their absolutely wonderful package and upgrading and updating systems. And they have dipped a toe in those waters, in a tentative sort of way, but nothing earth-shaking up until I pulled the plug on Win-10. And I don't really miss all that aggravation. It started out being fun, but that last year or so, it was more pain than pleasure, and I wasn't seeing the kind of progress I expected. So 'goodbye, Win-10'. As they say at Linux, "Linux just works!" And I'm really getting to like that!

And I still have the Win-8.1 Pro for my programs that don't run in Linux, so I've basically got the best of both.

      Cheers,
      Ray.
