When you're up there near the top of the food chain, like Elon Musk, sometimes the rarified air leads to oxygen depletion and one begins to hallucinate. That's the only explanation I can come up with for this bizarre idea.
And Chris Woodyard, who wrote this piece, is absolutely right - this is an old idea taken from message systems used decades ago in offices and department stores. There are huge differences in scale, however, and what's practical in a small tube over short distances isn't necessarily adaptable to systems as large as this would need to be. A whole other set of parameters applies here, and I'm not even considering the Stupidity Factor. That goes without saying. If asked, I'd call this one 'The Tampon Express'. Today's Question Everything therefore is: "What was Elon Musk thinking when this brainwave struck?"
