Practicing night shots -

The trick is to get the camera rock-steady, and then don't jiggle it as the shutter is triggered. This isn't perfect, for sure, but I'm getting better slowly. I think I need a better tripod, or maybe just bolt the camera to a cement block..... and then throw it out the window!

  1. I sort of like that idea of throwing it out the window sometimes. :-)

Actually, you're inspiring me to get back to trying to photograph the moon. I've never really figured out how to take pictures at night and would like to learn how. Of course, one problem is always having the shutter open and any motion..

  2. @ Tommy:

These compact digitals are nice, and their zoom lenses help, but of course the 'wiggle problem' is a big drawback. They recommend a good tripod (which mine isn't!) and a steady finger on the shutter release.

Taking shots of the moon, for any kind of detail, you need a good zoom, because even the 24X on the Pentax X70 doesn't really show any
clear details except right along the terminator, when there is one.
So don't expect to see any old moon buggy, or anyone's footprints.

For night shots, forget the "automatic" setting - you'll need to get into something that offers you choices of various types of scenes, and choose something like "night - landscapes" or similar, which boosts the available light coming in, and slows the shutter to grab it. And good luck with that. If you're like me you'll need it..... I waste a lot more shots than I ever keep. Thank God this isn't film.
