The Late, Late Show: Hemingway and Gellhorn
I have a bad habit of getting comfortable in bed watching TV with headphones so the sound won't annoy the neighbors on the other side of the walls, and then staying up much too late (or too early in the morning) to see how it ends.
This film is about a couple of famous 20th century writers and insufferable but fascinating characters who loved their wars both at home and abroad, and speaking of 'broads' Hemingway had far too many for his own good or theirs.
He seemed obsessed with proving his manhood and seemed to equate that with being a great man. Apparently, he was very insecure and perhaps afraid that being known as a famous writer might make him appear less of a real man.
So he evidently over-compensated by being a 'big prick' rather than a 'big man'.
As one reviewer says, 'Every time you're tempted to give up on this film, it takes a new turn, and you're hooked all over again, to see how it goes.' It goes about two and a half hours, and Kidman plays the globe-trotting bulletproof bitch as if she's had some experience at it, looking great all the while. Catch it if you can.
