Answering Tom's Question(s)....

Please see below under yesterday's entry for "Security: Does Bitdefender Free really work?" - Tom asks, "Where's the Start Button?" and I explain....

Briefly, it's that Windows Logo at the extreme left end of the Taskbar. When you tap or click it, the window shown will open, and the Power Button (Two choices come up: Shut Down and Restart) is the second one above that Windows Logo.

I like my Desktop Icons for Restart and Shutdown, because they require fewer steps to get things happening. If you'd like to make your own, here's how:-
Right-click an empty spot of the Desktop for the little drop-down menu, and choose "New" and "Shortcut"... This little window will open.....

...And here's what you type in it, being careful of your spelling and spacings....
This first one is making a Shutdown shortcut.....there is one single space between each of the items after "Shutdown.exe" and one between it and the first command.

Your shortcut's generic icon will now be on the Desktop and operational, but you may wish to change its icon for something more appropriate. And I hear someone asking "What's all that 'code' after the address in the little window?"
I'm glad you asked, and this is why the spelling and spacing are important. This is a set of commands for the Shutdown.exe, and what it is telling it is:- Shutdown (/s) and force-close (/f) any open programs, and do it within a time of five seconds (/t 05), and of course if you don't do it exactly right, it just doesn't work for you.

The one for Restart (or Reboot, whichever you wish) is done the same way, except in the address line you type as follows:-

And this one is saying:- Restart (/r) and force-close any open programs (/f) and do it within a time of five seconds (/t 05). Again, you may wish to change that generic icon to something you like better. And enjoy your shortcuts!
