End of an Era

This is wallpaper-sized if you'd like a copy - just click inside it to enlarge it and then save it to your own file.

I sent this image to an email pal back east who spends his winters in Florida and he was unimpressed. He said, "What have they done except build the space station and fix the Hubble telescope, and prove that man can survive in space as long as he has an earth-like environment?"

To which, I cheerfully replied that they've created lots of pollution with all those blast-offs, used up lots of non-renewable resources, and contributed for 30 years to the fantasy that we will one day 'conquer the stars' and zoom around the universe in our magical craft, spreading our self-destructive ways to untold new and possibly virgin worlds. But it ain't going to happen folks, because things out there are just spaced out too far apart for commuting between them at anything less than light speed, and to go that fast requires an infinite source of energy, which, fortunately, we don't have and will never get. So the planet you're standing or sitting on right now is the only one you're ever going to visit - get used to it.
And maybe think about taking better care of it.

  1. Amen and thank you! Yes, it's WONDERFUL that they were able to launch the Hubble and get all those NEATO pics but...for how long and...eventually, that will end up being "space junk" as well, because "nothing lasts forever." And...that "space junk" coulda been money to help fund community building restorations, educational, family, and job programs for many, MANY disadvantaged (heck, even "middle class"!!) people for YEARS to come! It's quite sickening how SELFISH and SELF-ABSORBED this "niche" has been, ALL these DECADES/YEARS!

  2. Right On, TC - and a big warm hug to you!

When our Creator made the universe, there were allowances made for our nasty tendencies and our selfishness, and our desire to take over everything and run the whole show. So all those other cute bits that are flying around out there are just a little too far away for us to get our sticky little fingers on them to fight over. After all, God's no dummy and knows what we're like. So here we are, and here we stay.
