The Start Screen re-organized....
Now that I've figured out how to add my own little tiles to the Start Screen, it's also a simple thing to unpin those that you don't want showing, and let them return to the obscurity of the Inner Sanctum. Less is more, and all that.
And I think I had one too many steps in the procedure for locating the correct folder into which to drag shortcuts to whatever Apps or applications you'd really like to have on this mobile memo board called the Start Screen. After you create your own program's shortcut, you need two copies of it if you want one showing on each of your Start Screen and your Desktop. For convenience in manipulating all that, a nice little folder under your username's main one is a good idea. Name it 'Shortcuts' or 'Whoop-de-doo' or whatever makes you giggle, as long as you remember where you put it, because you'll need it again soon.
Then, to get the tile on the Start Screen, park your 'Shortcuts' folder against the right edge of your screen (so you can still see the Desktop icons) and then navigate to Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Windows Accessories. Drag and drop your shortcuts into that Accessories folder, and then look at the Start Screen to see if it shows up there. If it doesn't, then try leaving it in the folder above that, the 'Programs' one. If you look through some of the folders in that same one (Start Menu) as well as Programs, there are others with other shortcuts parked in them, presumably to spring into action when you open that particular folder. For example, the Windows Ease of Access one has shortcuts for Magnifier, Narrator, and the On-screen Keyboard. Strangely enough, the Startup folder isn't starting up anything - it's totally empty. Similarly, the one for Maintenance is also empty. The message obviously being "If it works, we ain't fixin' it, Folks!". Similarly, the one for Administrative Tools is empty as well - and as soon as I find a way to make a shortcut to Task Manager, I'm going to put it in there, and see it makes it show up on the front window with all those other pretty little tiles. Anyway, if your shortcut in Windows Accessories doesn't turn into a dazzling tile along with those others, try leaving it in the folder above that level, Programs. That will probably do the trick. Works for me!
