Meanwhile, in the harbor...

An incoming empty freighter pumps out ballast in preparation for loading.

  1. To be close enough to water to see ship going by – that would be nice.

  2. Alas, My Dear, I'm not that close, but the camera has a 42X zoom lens.

The ship is about three and a half kilometers away from here.

  3. I like it...You've got a great camera there...(I'm sure you had it mounted on that fancy dancy tripod you bought sometime back... I remember seeing the ore boats passing through the Soo Locks in upper Michigan where my Uncle Joe was lock master of the Poe Lock...hehe ...My mom and dad grew up there...

  4. @ Uncle Ron -

...No, actually this was a freehand shot.

I was trying to get it before the ship's bow got behind those trees, and just barely made it.

And this little Nikon really is a nice camera. It takes sharper pictures than the others. The Fuji has more zoom, and the Pentax is an older lower-zoom model. They both work well, but I often find myself reaching for the Nikon when I want a nice sharp image. Am I writing a commercial here?

I never did watch a ship go through those locks at the Soo during all the years I worked near there for the power company - I was always in and out of town doing shopping or doctor visits or whatever, and then right back out to the power station again. But I'm told those locks are quite famous :)
