Tom in New York writes: "Thought you'd like to see this one, Ray..." and sends this link to a Financial Times article about Windows 8. Windows 8.5 is on the way, it seems. So what do I do with my two copies of Windows 8.0, which, by the way, are each keyed to the computer on which they were first installed, and that's to prevent bootlegging. I've made their DVDs, which now will become part of history. A history I've helped test and suggest.
I like Windows 8, even though I've bitched about some features, because Win-8 is a progression of the series of operating systems with which Microsoft has brought millions of us into the 21st century, and it's definitely not all bad. Their emphasis on touch and tablets in response to a perceived threat from Apple was overdone, I think, because 90% of the personal computer market including nearly all the business community still uses desktops - many with previous operating systems like Windows 7 and Windows XP, and the cost of tossing all that and replacing it with touch-enabled all-in-ones or tablets is excessive and prohibitive. Also, even with full multi-touch enabled hardware, there are still lots of things you need a good keyboard and mouse for doing easily and well. So my
thanks to Mighty Microsoft for seeing the writing on the wall and for listening to all of us whining users out here in cyberspace. I look forward anxiously to the arrival of Windows 8.5 and so should you. And if little Sally down in Redmond is
reading any of this, I'd just like to say "Hang in there, Darling, there's better operating systems ahead." Is it time I wrote another long-winded list of wishes?
