Question Everything: What is the purpose of Religion?

Today's 'Question Everything' is prompted by recent events, and I am wondering what you and most people think the purpose of religion really is. If we judge by recent events and recent wars in certain parts of the world, we might easily jump to the conclusion that religion gives us the excuse to kill off those who do not profess to believe as we do. Is that a correct evaluation of it? Of course not!

There isn't a God anywhere who would recommend such a thing because to do so would be contrary to the qualities of God. Anyone who misunderstands that simply doesn't know as much about their religion as they ought to. And there are far too many of those running around loose with guns in their hands these days.

  1. People have always tried to find an explanation for the world the way it is, ever since sections of advanced intelligence started to develop in the heads of our ancestors. It became necessary to invent Gods, a God, and various religions, depending on where they lived on the planet. Amazing how all ancient peoples have developed different believes for the same universal yearning to find an explanation for how the world ticks.
The development of the sciences has reduced the need for "higher authorities" a bit. Or has it really?

The different believes are not meant to act against each other. That´s just a wrong interpretation of their existence.

Far less so do such interpretations grant a right to criminal actions against each other. That´s a mere question of law and order, of behaving sensibly in a community.

  2. I am so glad to hear from you, and to know that you are OK, and that we are on the same page about all this.

I wrote today's blog entry before I found your comment, and when I read your remarks, I was struck by how similar our thinking is about this.

Thank you for helping to explain it to our readers. I hope you are well and my best wishes to you for the New Year. Please continue to comment whenever you wish.
