Correcting mistakes... (mine!)

I went into EasyBCD this morning, to freshen up the boot records, or so I thought.....

And when the settings list looked alright, I clicked "BCD Deployment" .....

And that's where I got into trouble. I clicked the button "Install BCD" assuming it would overwrite the record with a fresh version. Wrong! When I did a Restart, I got a nice big black screen saying Windows was unable to start, and I should insert the install disk and use the "Repair" option to fix it.

In this case, that only works if you get into Advanced repairs, and into the Command Prompt option there. When you're in Command Prompt, you can use Bootrec.exe to fix your mistakes. For a list of its commands, type in the following:  Bootrec.exe /? (That's one space ahead of the /?) and it will show you its various commands.

Those are:  /FixMBR which writes the MBR to the system partition;
                 /FixBoot which writes a new boot sector to the system partition;
                 /ScanOS which scans for suitable Windows Operating Systems;
       and    /RebuildBCD which searches the drive for Windows systems, and
                shows you an itemized list, asking if each should be added to the
                BCD. You accept by typing a Y and pressing enter. I have three, so
                it took a bit longer.

After that, I ran the Bootrec.exe /FixMBR and then got out of there, and did a
computer restart. This time, it worked OK. But that left me with the old style black and white boot screen. To get that back to the nice Windows graphical interface with the light blue background,  open Command Prompt in Admin mode, and type in bcdboot C:\Windows and press enter. Then everything should be back to where it was before the mung hit the fan when you got creative.
Like I keep saying - "We learn by doing..."
