Anti-virus: you can't believe everything you read...

AVG gets a good rating from testers, but they tend to be aggressive about pushing their own brand, and as you may see above, they tend to exaggerate a situation while trying to sell you something. And also as you see above, there are ways of checking the information, and verifying for yourself how serious it is.

AVG said "40% fragmentation", while Auslogics, the best free defragmenting program on the web, said "1%". AVG said "92 Registry errors", while Glary Utilities, the best free fixer-upper on the web, said "2 Registry errors". So, like I said up top, you can't believe everything you read.

But that's not to say AVG Free isn't a good anti-virus. Of the various free anti-virus programs, they get one of the best ratings for detection and removal of malware. And that's what I want. I also have added protection with Malwarebytes Premium, and Superantispyware, so my eggs aren't all in one basket, so to speak.

I'm trying AVG because I'm not happy with Avast. I've had Avast Internet Security, on a two-year licence, and after the first year ended, they sent me a notice that my protection had expired and I should renew it. The hell I should.
If they're going to be like that, I'll go elsewhere. I also saw something about Avast being the cause of the right-click crashes in Windows Explorer. I can't verify that, but let's put it another way - with AVG Free replacing Avast in my Windows 8, I'm not getting that right-click crashing problem there. But I haven't yet solved the problem in Windows 8.1 - and I'd like to know why Microsoft has not been much help with that. This isn't a new problem in Windows. It goes back to at least Windows 7, judging by search results on the web. So if Microsoft is serious about wanting us to love our Windows, they could perhaps do more to make it run smoothly.
