At the risk of seeming a heartless callous ass...

...I can't help wondering how many man-hours or people-days are lost each year through tributes, memorials, remembrances and mournings for victims of violent criminal acts of all kinds in this land of the free and home of the brave. Has anyone ever tried to calculate a total? 

And the cost - it must be astronomical, considering the emotional and spiritual costs as well as the actual financial losses to families and loved ones. Has anyone ever tried to come up with a plan to reduce or limit all these negative effects? These can't possibly all be attributed to 'acts of God' because nobody's God is like that. There must be some other reason...
