Dear Ray...That's a pretty good pix of that ship 3 miles away...You certainly have a long zoom lens on your point and shoot camera...I am a pro (point and shoot) photographer...When I had my own studio...I had to lug around tons of equipment (Cameras, lens, flashes, batteries, etc.) Today...with a point and shoot ..all I need is the camera with it's built in zoom lens and flash...It's so much easier to take a pix...Why are the camera companies coming up with all this sophisticated stuff which none of us understands and only complicates taking the picture? My phone takes 8mp pix which are as sharp as can be...I don't need tons of lens and complicated cameras to take good pictures...Just a Point and Shoot...
Yes, today's cameras make it much easier to get nice pictures. The Nikon used on this has a maximum of 42X for zoom, and takes nice sharp pictures on a good day. I also have a Fuji SL-1000 that has a 50X zoom but at the upper zoom ranges, it isn't quite as sharp as the Nikon. It does take better night shots though, so they each have their own advantages. It's all about the sensor size, mostly, and those are getting better.
