Today's 'Question Everything' ....

Question Everything:

Why do the nearby mountain peaks, about 4 miles away as the crow flies, look just as large and sharply defined in my Bausch & Lomb 'Legacy' 10 x 50 binoculars as they do in images taken at 50X by my compact digital camera?

A partial explanation for it may be that the '50X' of the camera doesn't begin from the same point of reference as that of the binoculars. Those binoculars are magnifying whatever is seen by the (if you'll pardon the expression 'naked') eye by a power of 10, whereas the camera, having a wide-angle feature, is beginning its '50X' from what is essentially the 'negative' setting of
the wide-angle view. So the camera is counting from the extreme of its wide angle, through a'zero' or 'naked eye' point, and then to its maximum zoom, which it is calling '50X' but which in actual practice may be more like forty-something, if that. In other words, the camera is 'fudging' on the facts - they're bullshitting us! Because there's no way a view through ten-power binoculars ought to look anywhere equivalent to that of a '50X' zoom lens. And in answer to your question "Is nothing sacred anymore?" the obvious answer is "No, Virginia, nothing, and you can bet your sweet bippy on that!"

  1. I'm thinking up a suitable answer....and while I am, do you smell something burning?

Really, I like two kinds of questions: (1.) Hypothetical, and (2.) Stupid.

Then, I like to try to answer, even if it means gasping for air while enduring the overpowering stench of hot, steaming bullshit....

    Next question, Please...
