One more time...

There's something the NRA doesn't want you thinking about. They don't want you thinking about the context within which the Second Amendment was created. They don't want you to be aware of the fact that when that was being made into law, the country was very new, and they feared being invaded by land-hungry foreigners like the French and the British, both of whom had designs on possessing every last square mile of North America, from Mexico to the North Pole.

Back then, it would still be several decades before Sam Colt perfected his revolver, and more decades until the Winchester repeating rifle and the Henry
appeared on the scene, so if the country was being invaded, they would need every able bodied shooter they could find to help in its defense, because it took time to reload a single-shot musket, and time was of the essence, as they say. So they agreed to allow the citizenry to bear arms for defense of the country, but they never envisioned today's situation which is totally beyond anything they imagined at the time of drafting the Constitution and those Amendments.

They couldn't foresee that in the future, there would be an America with more firepower than any nation on earth, and police forces more numerous than the armies of many other nations, and a paranoid citizenry packing semi-automatic weapons capable of killing whole groups of people within mere minutes. Neither could they foresee the stressful times we live in, nor the kinds of mental health problems suffered by a significant percentage of the population, nor a money-hungry gun industry egged on by the NRA for fun and profit. This whole thing has evolved from the sublime to the ridiculous, and it verges on insanity. It's time to step back, and take a hard look at it, and make some changes. As it is, Americans are their own worst enemies.
