I've been most of the afternoon and evening trying to find out why Windows 8.1 failed three times on two different computers to install the massive update which some have described as "service pack sized", and to get it installed manually from Microsoft Downloads.
The problem one is KB3000850, and it's about 448 Mb, and it takes so long to download, you'll think something's wrong. Something is wrong, but not with your setup - Microsoft should have broken it up into smaller bits, more easily handled. And before you try to install it, (if you haven't already succeeded) make sure you've already got KB3003057 and KB3014442 installed beforehand. Then it should be successful. And they don't tell you these things ahead of time.
The reason I suggest getting these three updates from Microsoft Downloads is because each from there comes with its own stand-alone installer, and that is probably what makes the difference between a successful installation and one that isn't. And you can choose which ones to do first, (the two smaller ones) and that's something else that doesn't happen if you're depending on Windows Update to do it. So if you look at your installed updates, and don't find all of these, this is the way to get them to install successfully.
