One day, at the nearby walk-in clinic, the on-duty doctor was a semi-retired Cardiologist, whom I got chatting with, mostly about my heart problems - which wasn't what brought me there - and also about the shortage of general practitioners. The kindly old Cardiologist remarked " The GP shortage isn't any mystery - these youngsters at med school these days all want to specialize, so they can work half a day, and golf the other half, and live the good life. They don't really want full-time committed relationships with a group of patients, such as might be the case if they became family doctors."
And that, in the good doctor's words, explains all this; there's probably just too many specialists for the number of available jobs. And these kids would rather starve than work in the boonies, treating skinned knees or vaginal yeast infections, or handing out Flu shots. It's absolutely beneath their dignity....
