USA Today: Long zoom cameras: Fujifilm Finepix SL1000
I've had this camera since July, and I love it. One of those you interviewed for the USA Today article said 'You reach a point at which you can't steady the camera enough to take a picture.' The Cure: Get a good tripod, like a Manfrotto, with a Milano B-2 Ballhead. I've even had some success shooting freehand at 50X taking pictures of aircraft, but that was more luck than good management.
This camera has good low-light characteristics, and here's an example of that,
taken in the middle of the night, of a street scene nearby, as a test of it....
This camera is a 'keeper'. Get a spare battery and a good fast card for it.
P.S. -
This camera has better specs than a comparable Canon 50X, and was $110 cheaper, so the savings went into a spare battery and a better card. So do your homework before you go shopping. It pays, and I have the proof.
